Vintage Moroccan Orange Azilal Wool Floor Rug

This vintage handwoven Moroccan Azilal rug features a design of asymmetrical black crisscross shapes and border edge set against a stunning tangerine orange-colored field. The thick wool pile is shaggy and full and the rug is finished with a natural wool warp fringe to one end. This unique and colorful rug makes a bold statement and is a beautiful example of an artisan-crafted rug infused with traditional symbolism, yet with a strikingly modern abstract aesthetic.

CONDITION
Very good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. Pile is mostly high and full throughout with only a few isolated areas of slightly uneven wear and minor fading. Fringe edges show wear and fraying, but not detracting from overall vintage character.

Azilal Moroccan Rugs
Azilal rugs are handwoven by women artisans from the Berber tribes of the Azilal region which extends from north of the High Atlas to the southern foothills of the Middle Atlas mountains of Morocco. Similar to the Beni Ourain, Azilal rugs are one-of-a-kind pieces, woven from natural dyed and undyed sheep’s wool. Far rarer than the Beni Ourains, they often feature ebony diamond lattice designs on a neutral white background, but are distinguished by their abstract detailing and highlights. Lacking a written language, ancient Berber weavers would incorporate ancestral myths into their textiles using abstract images and symbols. This magic symbolism and a minimalist design give these Berber carpets their unique appeal.
